Business

Curriculum Intent

We aim to provide the business knowledge needed to enter the workplace and to become an active member of society in an ever changing global environment. 

Business students at Orleans Park will be entrepreneurial, independent learners, confident presenters and strong team players with a sound understanding of the world in which they live.  Students will develop personal qualities that in the future will support their economic well being.

Key Stage 3 (from Year 9)

In Year 9 students will cover the following topics:

  • The purpose of Business: including different types of businesses and trends that impact decision making in business.
  • Marketing: including the marketing mix
  • Finance: including types of costs, revenue, profit, breakeven and cash flow
  • Production: including factors of production, types of production, quality and the sales process
  • Human Resource: The employee - employer relationship, including motivation and employment law
The business plan: Students will consolidate their learning in one business document
 

Key Stage 4

In Year 10 and 11 students will apply their learning from Year 9 in a more formal context using exam type questions.  The theory of business will be learnt following the Edexcel specification:

Theme 1: Investigating Small Business

Enterprise and entrepreneurship, Spotting a business opportunity, Putting a business idea into practice, Making the business effective, Understanding external influences on business

Theme 2: Building a Business

Growing the business, Making marketing decisions, Making operational decisions, Making financial decisions, Making human resource decisions
 

Key Stage 5

We follow the A-level Edexcel course in year 12 and 13.  

The course is delivered in 4 themes which combine Marketing, Operations, Finance and Human Resources. 

Pupils will be taught how to evaluate risk versus reward using strategic tools such as the Boston Matrix, Ansoff’s Matrix, Porter’s Strategic Matrix, Porter’s 5 forces, SWOT analysis and financial ratios.  

This course requires essay writing and interpretation of data.  Good numeracy and literacy skills are essential.

The course is theoretical, there are no practical requirements, assessment is 100% exam based.

Studying Business opens up many opportunities in the future, all job roles require some Business knowledge.
