Super Curricular

Students in the Sixth Form are encouraged to go beyond the boundaries of their A Level curriculum, expanding their knowledge and deepening their understanding of the subjects they are passionate about. Alongside their regular prep and directed study tasks, this independent exploration plays a vital role in shaping their academic journey.

Super-curricular activities are at the heart of this process. These are not just extra tasks, but meaningful learning experiences that connect directly to a student’s intended university course. They offer an opportunity to explore ideas in greater depth, develop critical thinking, and demonstrate genuine enthusiasm for a subject beyond the classroom.

A student’s super-curricular journey might include delving into wider reading or independent research, attending lectures, webinars, or specialist workshops, or completing online courses and certifications. Others may choose to challenge themselves through academic competitions, participate in conferences, or gain valuable insight through work experience and internships in their chosen field.

Engaging in these activities shows far more than academic ability, it reveals curiosity, initiative, and a real drive to learn. These qualities not only strengthen university applications but also lay the foundation for future success in higher education and beyond.

Why Are Super-Curricular Activities Important?

With university applications becoming increasingly competitive, super-curricular activities allow students to stand out by demonstrating a higher level of engagement and academic maturity. Here’s why they matter:

They show subject-specific interest

Universities seek applicants who are genuinely excited about their chosen field and committed to studying the subject for 3+ years. Super-curricular activities provide compelling evidence of a student’s passion.

They develop independent learning skills

Engaging in super-curricular activities requires students to take initiative, undertake research, learn independently, and manage their time effectively. These skills are crucial for university success, where students are expected to work autonomously.

They demonstrate academic curiosity

Super-curricular involvement indicates that a student is proactive in expanding their knowledge and eager to challenge themselves. This intellectual curiosity is exactly what universities want to see.

They prepare students for university study

The materials and experiences students engage with can demonstrate their ability to handle more challenging academic concepts, ideas, and resources—similar to those encountered at university. This is particularly important for competitive courses, helping admissions tutors feel confident in a student’s ability to cope with academic rigour.

They help confirm subject interest

Super-curricular activities allow students to explore their subject in greater depth, helping them clarify their academic interests and confirm that their chosen course is the right fit. This can prevent situations where a student realises too late that a course may not suit them.
