Design & Technology

Curriculum Intent

D&T aims to give students an understanding of developments in the increasingly technological world in which they live. It teaches them about the uses, properties and working characteristics of a wide range of materials and components. It gives them the opportunity to bring together this knowledge and that gained in other areas of the curriculum to solve problems, either alone, or as part of a team.

Key Stage 3

In Years 7 and 8 we carry out projects which allow students to experience a range of techniques and build confidence in their skills:

  • Designing for a client
  • Sustainability
  • The impact of technology on society
  • CAD software (Computer Aided Design), 2D Design
  • CAM machines (Computer Aided Manufacture), laser cutter, 3D printer, plotter
  • Hand tools, workshop machines and processes
  • A range of materials and components including electronics
  • Robotics and programming
  • Generating and presenting ideas

In Year 9 our work takes on greater depth as we prepare for the GCSE course. Our students will further develop their skills and knowledge through project and theory work and participation in Ventura, a national design and enterprise competition run by the Design Museum.

Key Stage 4

In Year 10 students will continue to develop skills and knowledge through project and theory work:

  • A wider range of materials and associated techniques and processes.
  • The needs and requirements of the user/client
  • Designer influences
  • Generating solutions to unfamiliar situations and effective presentation
  • Manufacturing and economic models in industry
  • Product analysis

At the end of Year 10 students will start their NEA (Non-Examined Assessment) in which they will need to respond to situations set by the exam board. The NEA will continue through to Year 11 and will cover the aspects of the iterative design process:

  • Task analysis
  • Client’s needs
  • Materials and techniques research
  • Idea generation and development
  • Planning and manufacturing the final design
  • Testing and evaluating with the client

Students will also be prepared for the written exam which will cover the theory and design process covered throughout the course.

Further study and career opportunities include architecture, information technology, product design, software engineering, civil engineering, carpentry, set and prop design, graphic design, mechanical engineering, aeronautical engineering and many more.
